Bridging AI Concepts with Hands-On Learning
One of my final sessions of 2024 took place on 21 December 2024, where I facilitated a full-day AI Awareness and Practical Applications Workshop for the Department of Administration, Ministry of Education.

Participants from HR, finance, transport, HSE, and training explored how AI could fit into their work—not through theory, but by building models of real-world applications. Their builds examined the risks and potential benefits of AI, how it influences the future of work, and its impact on both current and future generations of students. Some mapped out systems and workflows, others explored how AI could enhance well-being, learning, and workforce transformation, and many focused on integrating AI into strategic frameworks to improve daily operations.

A Digital Transformation Initiative
This workshop was part of a broader initiative under MOE’s Digital Transformation Plan, aimed at equipping public service staff with the skills and confidence to integrate AI into their workflows. Beyond just introducing AI tools, the workshop was designed to help participants critically assess where AI fits within their existing systems, what risks and ethical considerations come into play, and how AI-driven strategies can enhance long-term workforce planning.
Aligned with the Public Service Capability Development Framework (PSCDF), the session emphasized:
- Strategic Thinking – Identifying opportunities and risks in AI adoption while aligning its use with policy and workforce objectives.
- People Engagement – Strengthening collaboration and digital literacy to ensure AI supports, rather than disrupts, human-driven processes.
- Performance Culture – Moving beyond theoretical understanding to hands-on AI applications, empowering participants to experiment and refine AI-supported workflows.
- Organizational Capability – Encouraging a forward-thinking approach where AI is embedded into strategic frameworks, ensuring a sustainable, scalable digital transformation that benefits both employees and future generations of learners.

From Concept to Practical Application
We also explored ChatGPT, Gemini, and CoPilot, transitioning from theoretical discussions to real-world applications. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises, testing how AI could assist in streamlining administrative processes, automating repetitive tasks, and generating data-driven insights. They experimented with AI for report writing, summarizing key policies, analyzing trends, and enhancing decision-making workflows. The shift in perspective was evident—from “Can AI really help me?” to “I didn’t know AI could do this!”, as they began to see AI as a strategic tool to enhance efficiency and problem-solving within their respective roles.
It was inspiring to see how quickly participants connected AI to their work, not as a replacement for people, but as a tool to improve efficiency and decision-making. More than automation, AI represents a shift in how we adapt and grow alongside technology.
I look forward to seeing how these ideas evolve as part of the wider digital transformation journey.
